South Africa Travel Guide by Luke DuBose
Table Mountain, the Cape Winelands, the Garden Route, and big game safaris in Kruger. I’ll plan your South Africa trip so the city, the coast, and the bush all fit together.
South Africa is really two trips in one. There’s the Western Cape, with Cape Town, dramatic coastline, and world-class wine country. Then there’s the safari side, with Kruger and its private reserves in the northeast. The two are far apart and their best seasons don’t line up perfectly, so the order and timing matter. I’m Luke DuBose, and I design personalized itineraries that link it all with the right flights, the right lodges, and enough slow time to actually enjoy it.

Best for: safari first-timers, food and wine lovers, road trippers, bucket-list adventures.
Quick Facts
Best Time
Oct to Mar for Cape Town beaches and wine country. May to Sep (dry season) for the best Kruger game viewing.
Trip Length
10 to 14 days for Cape Town, the Winelands, and a safari. Add 4 to 5 days for the Garden Route.
Budget
$$ to $$$$ (great value in the cities, with safari lodges ranging from rest camps to high-end private reserves).
Vibe
Mountains meeting the ocean, vineyards, coastal drives, and unforgettable wildlife.
Top Experiences
Table Mountain
Hike up or ride the cableway for huge views over Cape Town and the coast. Go early on a clear day, since wind and cloud can close the top.
Cape Peninsula
Chapman’s Peak Drive, the penguins at Boulders Beach, and the wild cliffs of Cape Point. One of the great coastal day trips anywhere.
The Cape Winelands
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl, with historic estates, mountain views, and long lunches. Easy to reach from Cape Town.
Kruger Safari
One of Africa’s great parks for seeing the Big Five. Self-drive in the national park or stay in a private reserve for guided drives and walks.
The Garden Route
A scenic coastal road trip east of Cape Town, with lagoons, forests, beaches, and small towns like Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
Whale Watching in Hermanus
In season (roughly winter into spring), southern right whales come close to shore and can often be seen from the cliff paths.

Where to Stay
Cape Town
The V&A Waterfront for convenience, the City Bowl for restaurants and walkability, or Camps Bay and Sea Point for ocean views.
The Winelands
Franschhoek for a small-village feel and great food, or Stellenbosch for a lively university town surrounded by estates.
Kruger Area
National park rest camps for value and self-driving, or a private reserve lodge for guided drives, smaller groups, and a more immersive stay.
Logistics & Tips
Entry
US travelers can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Your passport needs at least two blank visa pages and should be valid for 30 days past your departure. Rules can change, so confirm before you go.
Health
The Kruger area is a malaria region. Talk to your doctor about prevention well before your trip. Cape Town and the Winelands are not.
Getting Around
Fly between Cape Town and the safari regions, since distances are large. Self-driving works well in the Western Cape. They drive on the left.
Safety
Use common sense in cities: avoid walking alone at night, keep valuables out of sight, and use ride-hailing or trusted drivers. Lodges and hosts give great local advice.
Book Early
The best safari lodges and Cape Town hotels fill up fast for December, January, and the dry season. Book these first and build the trip around them.
Packing
Neutral colors for safari, warm layers for early morning game drives, sun protection, and a windbreaker for Cape Town.
