Located over 200 miles above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø feels like the edge of the world in the best possible way. Snow-covered mountains rise straight from the water, Arctic air fills the harbor, and during the winter months the sun barely rises above the horizon.
But despite its remote location, Tromsø is surprisingly lively. Cafés, restaurants, and cozy bars fill the city center, and travelers from all over the world arrive here with one goal in mind:
Seeing the Northern Lights.
I visited Tromsø during a solo trip through Norway, and it quickly became one of the most memorable places I’ve traveled. Between aurora hunting, dog sledding, and Arctic landscapes, the city offers experiences that feel completely different from anywhere else in Europe.

Where Is Tromsø?
Tromsø is located in northern Norway, about 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.
Despite its remote location, getting there is relatively easy.
Most travelers fly from Oslo to Tromsø, which takes about two hours.
Once you arrive, you’ll find a small but vibrant city surrounded by dramatic Arctic landscapes. Mountains, fjords, and snowy wilderness are never more than a few minutes away.
Because of its location, Tromsø has become one of the best places in the world to experience Arctic adventures.
Best Time to Visit Tromsø
The best time to visit Tromsø depends on what you want to experience.
Winter (November – March)
Winter is when Tromsø truly feels like the Arctic.
This is the best time to see the Northern Lights, and it’s also when many of the region’s most unique activities take place.

I visited in November, which turned out to be a great time. The snow had arrived, the nights were long enough for aurora hunting, and the crowds were still manageable.
Summer (June – August)
Summer offers a completely different experience.
During this time, Tromsø experiences the Midnight Sun, where the sun never fully sets.
This season is perfect for hiking, kayaking, and exploring the surrounding fjords.
Things to Do in Tromsø
While the Northern Lights attract most travelers, there’s much more to Tromsø than aurora chasing.
Here are some of the best experiences the city has to offer.
Chase the Northern Lights
This is the main reason most travelers visit Tromsø.
Located directly beneath the Auroral Oval, Tromsø offers some of the best Northern Lights viewing opportunities in the world.
Most travelers book Northern Lights tours, which take you outside the city to darker areas with clearer skies.
Guides monitor weather conditions and aurora forecasts throughout the night and drive wherever necessary to find clear skies.
The night I saw the lights, our guide drove nearly two hours inland. Eventually the clouds cleared, and suddenly green ribbons of light began stretching across the sky.
Watching the aurora borealis dance across the Arctic sky is one of those travel experiences that truly lives up to the hype.
Go Dog Sledding in the Arctic
Dog sledding was easily one of the most memorable experiences of my trip.
Most tours take place outside Tromsø in remote Arctic valleys where you can drive your own sled pulled by a team of energetic huskies.
The moment the dogs start running, the silence of the Arctic landscape takes over. The only sounds are the sled gliding across the snow and the wind moving through the mountains.
It feels like stepping into a completely different era of exploration.
Visit the Arctic Cathedral
One of Tromsø’s most recognizable landmarks is the Arctic Cathedral.
Its triangular architecture resembles an iceberg rising from the surrounding landscape.
Located just across the bridge from the city center, the cathedral is especially beautiful when illuminated during the dark winter evenings.
Take the Fjellheisen Cable Car
For the best views in Tromsø, take the Fjellheisen cable car to the top of Mount Storsteinen.
From the summit, you’ll get panoramic views of the city, surrounding fjords, and distant Arctic mountains.
If you’re lucky, this can also be an incredible place to see the Northern Lights on clear nights.
Explore the Tromsø Waterfront
Tromsø’s harbor area is full of cozy restaurants, cafes, and Arctic-themed museums.

Walking along the harbor during winter, surrounded by snowy mountains and Arctic air, feels almost cinematic.

Is Tromsø Expensive?
Like much of Norway, Tromsø is not a cheap destination.
Meals at restaurants often cost between $30–$50, and guided tours can range from $120–$250 depending on the activity.
However, the experiences here are unlike anywhere else in the world.
For many travelers, Tromsø is less about luxury and more about experiencing the raw beauty of the Arctic.

Winter temperatures often drop below freezing.

There’s something about the Arctic that changes your perspective.

For me, Tromsø felt like a place designed for reflection.
Between chasing the Northern Lights, exploring Arctic landscapes, and experiencing the silence of the wilderness, it became one of the most memorable stops on my Norway trip.
